My Holy Grail Concealers

If there is something I happen to know a thing or two about, it's concealers. Through my early twenties, I had a very sudden bout of bad acne, which lasted a few years. It became so bad that I wanted to hide away or at least become completely invisible in public. Due to my job as a make up artist - hiding was not an option, so I had to master the art of concealing - whilst still looking natural, seems impossible right?

The trouble with acne is not only are the blemished areas often quite red and angry, the texture that comes with the blemishes means even when covered, the bumps still show through. I tried many different ways to cover my acne, I think I may have tried most high end concealers on the market (my poor bank balance!), but it paid off in the end and I think I've found my 'cannot live without' holy grail concealers..

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick - you know when you've found something you can't live without when you panic if you left the house without it. I've used it for over 5 years now and what's so wonderful about it is that no matter how much you use, or how much you top up with during the day, it will never look heavy. Don't be deceived by the name - I usually use it as a concealer over a liquid foundation or tinted moisturiser. Bobbi Brown is an advocate of 'skin that looks like skin' and although this can be built to a full coverage where needed, it will always look like my skin. The finish is a long wearing semi matte, it's super easy to blend and what's more - it covers redness and those stubborn textured areas. Available in (a whopping) 39 shades.

Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Creme

Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealing Creme - oh my, you know I had to pick this product up as soon as I read the title! I tested it out in the shop and loved the consistency straight away. You see, many high coverage concealers can have the tendency to be dry and as my skin is normal-dry already, I try to avoid the drier textures, this one is light and creamy to feel, and does exactly what it says - it covers the most stubborn of blemishes, stays put all day and also works well under the eyes if need be. Praise be Becca! Available in 12 shades.

Hourglass Vanish Stick

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Stick - at £42 this is the most I've ever spent on a base product (eeek!) but my gosh, I'd pay that again. There was a lot of hype surrounding this product during its launch, so *obviously* I caved and had to try it for myself. It feels quite different in texture to the Bobbi Brown Skin Stick, almost the feel of a tinted moisturiser although the coverage packs a bigger punch, something I learnt very early on - a tiny bit goes a long way! As well as pinpoint concealing, this works amazingly as an all over foundation, and in particular I love to wear this on nights out. Not only does it cover my often angry break out situation, but the formula sort of well, 'cushions' the skin so that it looks less textured and more just healthy and plump. Oh and it's waterproof too, bonus. Available in 26 shades.

MAC Select Cover Up

MAC Select Cover Up Concealer - I have lost count of how many of these little tubes I have worked my way through. I have relied on this for years, and when I first had acne, I had quite large areas of blemishes and redness, so what I love about this is that it's a liquidy texture, meaning that if there are bigger areas to conceal, this does the trick within seconds. Minimal blending needed! I apply this where needed after I have done a thin layer of foundation, and it just adds a second skin effect but with a hard-to-detect matte finish, 10 hour wear although I would argue longer. Thankfully my acne days have passed now, but I always keep a tube in my make up bag, just incase! Available in 14 shades.

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer - you want heavy duty, I'll give ya heavy duty! This stuff is the real deal if you suffer from intense acne or redness. It can cover tattoos instantly, and mixed with a tiny bit of moisturiser, I adore it to cover blemishes. The formula feels light and very creamy, non clogging and your skin just looks fresh, smooth and hydrated. It took me a while to find a colour that works for me (it's worth the patience to find one) but what you are left with is instantly camouflaged areas of skin (or use it sparingly all over) that looks bright and clear, with very little effort involved. Available in 16 shades.

I'd love to know if you have any can't-function-without cover ups! What I learnt through this process of finding the ideal solutions to covering up, is that skincare also plays a huge part, ensuring the skin is hydrated is key. Also, incase you're curious, after two years of dealing with the acne, I eventually plucked up the courage to see my GP who prescribed me a topical lotion to apply, and my acne was 90% cleared up within 48 hours, I wish I hadn't put it off for so long. We live and we learn!

Til next time, Sophy x
